“Man's capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary.”-Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr

NOTES FROM LEAH:

In order to effect real change, we need people who are willing to volunteer their time, knowledge, and yes even money.  Without that, we are little more than a social group that gets together for food and protests.

A few days ago, I sent out an email looking for volunteers to do an voter information drive.  I think it is one of the most important things we could do between now and the mid-term elections.  However, to make it happen, we need a subcommittee of members willing to gather the information, put it in pintable formating, and man tables to get it out to people.  We also need someone to step up and lead that submcommittee.  So far, I have received 3 maybes on manning tables and two yeses on manning tables.  If you are willing and able to volunteer and/or lead that subcommittee please let me know.

I also asked for input on who would be interested in attending the June 14th No Kings watch party being sponsored by Indivisible.  So far,it appears only 5 of us are interested.  If there isn't greater interest, we will scrap this plan.

Finally, we are also looking to form a subcommittee of people who are willing to attend local meetings at the city, township and county level, along with school board meetings.  If ou are interested, please let me know.

If you are willing/able to volunteer in any of these capacities, please email admin@deltacountyunified.org

Rise Up and Sing

June 14, time TBD

On June 14th, Indivisible groups around the country are hosting Watch Parties. This is a joint effort with the Committee for the First Amendment and will include a celebrity packed concert with Pattie Smith, Bette Midler, Rufus Wainwright, Sasha Allen, and more. While Trump uses Flag Day for self promotion, propaganda, and lies, we will celebrate the freedoms our country was founded on. If you are interested in attending a watch party, or in hosting one, please let me know by emailing admin@delacountyunified.org‍ ‍

NOTES FROM INDIVISIBLE "WHAT'S THE PLAN?" NATIONAL MEETING (4-23-26):

1) Darializa Avila Chevalier, running for Congress in NY-13 (Inglewood, Washington Heights). They discussed her work in community organizing and how we need more community organizers in Congress. Leah G. said, "We need less show horses and more work horses in Congress."  Darializa doesn't take any PAC money AT ALL so she relies on donors like us. Here's her site if you'd like to contribute:https://www.darializaforcongress.com

2) They discussed the current situation at Delaney Hall in New Jersey. For those of you who may not know, detainees are conducting a hunger strike and protests are happening around the clock. NJ Sen. Andy Kim was pepper sprayed by ICE when trying to conduct oversight. Even Gov. Mikie Sherrill has also been denied access. ICE has even pushed protestors into oncoming traffic

3) Next national event, "Rise Up and Sing" will be held on June 14...it's going to be a big live-stream "spectacle" (Ezra's word) to compete with the spectacle that Trump is planning for his birthday/Flag Day.

THREE-MINUTE CALL TO ACTION:

Call both Michigan Senators and Rep Bergman* to tell them to STOP the budget reconciliation funding bill that would give ICE and CBP $65.2B more! The 5 Calls app has a script. If you haven't yet downloaded the app, here are the links again:

*NOTE: It may seem like calling Bergman is useless, but their offices keep tallies of calls from opposition, and if enough of us call we can at least scare him into realizing his position is unpopular with his constituents.
