"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors" - Plato

NOTES FROM LEAH:

It's almost time for me to renew this email address and our website. If you regularly read these newsletters, please email me at admin@deltacountyunified.org so I can assess whether this is an effective way to reach people.

This week, under the leadership of Mike Johnson, Republicans took an early recess to avoid voting on the War Powers Act, which the Senate recently passed. They also avoided the growing scrutiny over Trump's $1.8 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund." We need to speak up and speak out, by demanding our Representatives (Jack Bergman) start representing us. Please flood his office with messages about these two issues.

On May 20th, the Michigan House passed a set of property tax bills that would eliminate an estimated $3.2 billion from the 2027 School Aid Fund and $3.3 billion in 2028. Here is a link to action you can take if you opposed this move: Michigan Communities Demand Full & Sustainable Public School Funding

On June 14th, Indivisible groups around the country are hosting Watch Parties. This is a joint effort with the Committee for the First Amendment and will include a celebrity packed concert with Pattie Smith, Bette Midler, Rufus, Wainwright, Sasha Allen, and more. While Trump uses Flag Day for self promotion, propaganda, and lies, we will celebrate the freedoms our country was founded on. If you are interested in attending a watch party, or in hosting one, please let me know by emailing admin@delacountyunified.org

NOTES FROM INDIVISIBLE "WHAT'S THE PLAN?" NATIONAL MEETING (4-23-26):

1) Brad Lanter, running for Congress in Brooklyn and endorsed by Indivisible, was the guest. They discussed his work escorting people from their immigration hearings in New York to shield them from ICE. He is a practicing Jew who speaks out against the genocide in Palestine...his catch phrase (I've heard him say it in other interviews) is "No Israeli is safe until Palestine is free." He doesn't take any PAC money AT ALL so he relies on donors like us. Here's his site if you'd like to contribute: https://www.bradlanderforcongress.com

2) They discussed "Citizens Brigades"...groups that will post themselves at polling places to make sure the regime doesn't try to pull any shenanigans. They have chosen Republican-controlled states where Dems have a chance of flipping seats like Texas and North Carolina (Michigan is not one of them but there are other ways we can help like getting the word out about voter rights in those states)

3) Next national event, "Rise Up and Sing" will be held on June 14...it's going to be a big live-stream "spectacle" (Ezra's word) to compete with the spectacle that Trump is planning for his birthday/Flag Day.

UPDATE FROM LAST WEEK'S ACTION:

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee issued a one-year reprieve for Tony Carruthers following a botched lethal injection attempt on May 21. The ACLU has formally committed to continuing its legal fight for Carruthers. So if you haven't signed the petition yet, you still have time to help save this man's life: ACLU petition to stop the wrongful execution of Tony Carruthers
