Of all the questions which can come before this nation, short of the actual preservation of its existence in a great war, there is none which compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendants than it is for us." ―President Franklin D. Roosevelt
Thank you to everyone who donated during the month of August. I don’t have a total yet, but I know we made it very close to the $800 goal and will be receiving a matching fund. We couldn’t have done it without you!
NOTES FROM LEAH B:
Indivisible is calling for our next No Kings Event to take place on October 17th. This will not be your standard protest. Rather, it is a call to encourage everyone to Vote Early, Vote In Person, and get out and Vote. We need to remind our community that WE decide who represents us, by voting! We will be discussing ideas and plans at our next board meeting.
We also have an important call to action. Word is, that the election clerk for Delta County has turned in her resignation. This makes having poll monitors in as many locations as possible. NOTES FROM INDIVISIBLE "WHAT'S THE PLAN?" NATIONAL MEETING (08-21-26):
The main topic of the meeting was Supreme Court reform with guest expert Elie Mystal. HIGHLY recommend listening to the podcast on this one!
1) Ethics code - Elie says the way to get them to agree to it is with Congress's power of the purse...take away their fancy courtrooms, extra security, expense accounts, clerk salaries, etc., until they agree to sign it (every other court in the U.S. has to sign ethics codes)
2. Term limits - This is one of the most popular but Elie explains why he doesn't think it will help...the current justices will argue that it can only apply to future appointments, which would mean Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh would likely outlast any Democratic nominee, which kicks the can down the road for decades
3. Expanding the court - Elie believes there should be 29 justices, equal to the amount of justices on the 9th District Court of Appeals. He had a really interesting idea that a Democratic president could use giving seats to the Republicans to help get the court reform to pass. He says the larger number will help the court to become more moderate
4. Jurisdiction stripping - this idea is to pass laws that strip the Supreme Court's ability to review laws...but this is basically unenforceable (listen to the podcast for more on this)

3-MINUTE CALL TO ACTION:
PROTECT THE PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS! A Canadian mining company wants to mine the Porkies and leave their waste in Lake Superior. We cannot allow this to happen! Gov. More info here: https://protecttheporkies.com/take-action
Contact state senator Ed McBroom
Contact state rep Dave Prestin

miag@michigan.govSample message:
As a Michigan resident, I'd like to file a formal complaint against the Michigan Strategic Fund regarding the illegal transfer of funds to the Copperwood Mine proposal and demand than an investigation be conducted on the following points:
1. The total subversion of the democratically elected Appropriations Committees
2. The unprecedented, illegal transfer of funds from an obsolete 2022 project to the Copperwood Mine proposal
3. The approval of Copperwood funding even though the company has failed to fulfill the original conditions of the 2024 grant
4. Potential Open Meetings Act violations
5. Potential violation of Article IV, Section 30 of the Michigan Constitution
